The popularity of essential oils has rapidly grown over the recent years. These oils have been used in different ways ranging from aromatherapy to personal beauty care, natural medicine treatments and household cleaning. To start with, you can apply these oils on your skin. Being a fat soluble product, these oils will be easily absorbed by your skin. Caution, however, should be taken not to apply them directly but rather mix them with carrier oils like apricot kernel or sweet almond oil. These carrier oils are also referred to as base oils and are cold-pressed to ensure they don’t evaporate easily like the essential oils do. If you have a sensitive skin, you need to choose your base oil carefully. Some of the popular choices for the base oil include coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, avocado oil and grape seed oil.
The other option of using these oils is by carefully inhaling them. In this case, you may rub several drops of oil in to the palm of your hand or on a tissue and then inhale them. You should test with one drop at the beginning just to ensure your body doesn’t react to the oil in an adverse way. As an option, you can easily make your own homemade inhaler for more comfortable use.
You can also inhale these oils through steam. In this case, you boil 2 to 3 cups of water and then pour it in a bowl before mixing it with 3 to 8 drops of the oil. You then place the bowl about 12 inches away from your nose and slowly inhale this steam. During the inhalation process, ensure the head and the bowl are covered with a towel. Also, you should keep your eyes closed. This method is ideal for energizing and relaxing your body at any time of the day. You need to remain alert and listen to your body so that you can stop the use of this method if you discover any irritation or discomfort. Remember that some people are allergic to essential oils.
Finally, you can also add these oils into a bath. Taking a bath with these oils can cause relaxing effects, especially after a busy day. Dropping the oil directly into water is not recommended as it won’t dissolve smoothly. Instead, you can use Epsom salts as a base, for instance, to ensure the essential oils dissolve well. With this option, you should avoid using chemically produced soaps so as to get the full benefits of the oil. One thing to remember is that essential oils can be highly concentrated and hence need to be used with caution. One drop of concentrated peppermint oil, for example, has the strength of up to 28 cups of peppermint tea. A few drops per bathtub are therefore sufficient in most cases.
